8 Outaouais summer activities to add to your bucket list

This year, we’re spoiled here in the Outaouais! In addition to the major summer activities that return year after year, there are many new ones definitely worth checking out. We’re thinking, for example, of the well-known Culture Trail and Mosaïculture Gatineau, both  right in the heart of downtown Gatineau.

Whether you’re looking for a little something to do as a couple, alone, with friends or with family, here are 8 good reasons to stay in the Outaouais this summer. Ready, set, go!

Ladies, this is the perfect occasion to get out your metallic sandals from Aldo. Canada’s largest horticultural exhibition is back this year in Jacques Cartier Park with 45 gigantic works and over 5.5 million plants (now that’s a lot of plants!) celebrating nature in all its splendour.

When: Until October 15

Where: Jacques Cartier Park

Cost: $15 for Gatineau residents 12 years and up with a season’s pass (on sale at Les Promenades Gatineau’s customer service desk). Free for children 11 years and under.

Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival

With big singers  like Charlotte Cardin, Vincent Vallières and Patrice Michaud, and comics like Rachid Badouri, Julien Lacroix and Rosalie Vaillancourt, the 31st edition of the Hot Air Balloon Festival looks to be another essential event. In addition to dozens of performers, the festival features inflatable games, morning yoga, fireworks, an amusement part, night glows and more. In short, something for everyone, big or small!

If you’re attending an evening show, use it as an opportunity to match your festival look with a casual jacket from Simons — perfect for the cooler September weather.

When: August 30 to September 3

Where: Parc de la Baie, Gatineau

Cost: From $30

Aerial park and ziplines

One of our favourite summer activities: an adventure in the woods featuring the Camp Fortune aerial park and ziplines. Made up of suspended walkways, rope bridges, net gangways and long ziplines, the Camp Fortune trek is easily one of the top summer activities in our region.

Get your casual threads ready. You’ll wear them for sure on this excursion, where you’ll go through the whole gamut of emotions.

When: Until November 4

Where: Camp Fortune

Cost: From $17

Kayak and paddleboard rental

The Outaouais is full of waterways — it would be a shame not to take full advantage of them, right? The solution: rent a kayak or paddleboard and travel along the Ottawa River. A landscape of mountain ranges, a walk with friends, a swim if it’s burning hot … in short, everything you need! Get out your best swimsuit from Bikini Village, wear it with your favourite shades from Sunglass Hut and you’re set!

When: All summer

Where: Expéditions Wakefield

Cost: From $45

Culture Trail

Inspired by Boston’s famous Freedom Trail, the Culture Trail features new one-time-only works and updated programming.  Walk this three-kilometre red line through downtown Gatineau neighbourhoods and discover points of interest,  public art, murals, exhibition and performance spaces, guided tours and much more.

The Culture Trail is the perfect opportunity to try that boho look  and wow the crowd in your best patterned jumpsuit.

When: Anytime

Where: Downtown Gatineau

Cost: Free

Morrison’s Quarry

If well-known blogs like Narcity are talking about it, it’s because visiting Morrison’s Quarry is an Outaouais must. You won’t find clearer water than here, right near Wakefield. Whether you’re a diving or bungee fan, or just looking for somewhere to make a BBQ, lay back in a floatation tank or crash out on a tropical-styled beach towel,  this is the place for you!

When: All summer

Where: Wakefield

Cost: Free

Casino Lac-Leamy Sound of Light

The very popular international fireworks competition returns this year from August 4 to 18, on the lovely site of the Canadian Museum of History.   Four countries will compete with sound effects, visuals and colours for the prestigious Zeus Trophy.

With comfort and elegance in mind, this is the time to put on your high-rise striped pants. For a well-put-together look, match them with a loafer or moccasin-style shoe.

When: From August 4 to 8

Where: Canadian Museum of History

Cost: From $8

Mont Cascades waterpark

Looking to cool down and beat the heat? Want to do something thrilling with friends or the kids? Search no more! Check out Mont Cascades waterpark.  With 10+ water slides and three pools, you’ll definitely find the perfect spot to cool down this summer.

Some friendly advice: Choose an adjustable swimsuit or a one-piece. The water slides can easily have some nasty surprises in store for us.  Forewarned is forearmed!

When: Until September 3

Where: Mont Cascades waterpark

Cost: From $19.99
