Fall is here, and (happily) seasonal fashions have started to show up on the racks of the big stores. To make sure your fall is error free, here are 10 fashion faux pas to avoid, so you can wear those booties, tights and patterns just right and match accessories and jewellery flawlessly.
1. CLOTHES THAT ARE TOO SHORT
Your first faux pas to avoid this season is clothes that are too short. Let us explain.
A crop top that leaves a glimpse of your navel, or small, tight shorts that cling to your butt … that’s not necessarily in the best of taste. What can you do? One thing is to go for pants that show some ankle. On the one hand, it’s sexy, and on the other, it makes for a nice transition between summer and fall. That’s something that works, and H&M gets it.
Maybe you’re in denial (understandably so) but come on, it’s time to say goodbye to summer. Sandals in fall are a no-no. So, gentlemen, if you’re not ready to get out those boots or ankle boots, try dress shoes. And ladies, we’ve got the perfect compromise — loafers. Our fave: the Joeya at Aldo.
3. TIGHTS AS PANTS
Let’s get one thing straight: tights and nylons are not pants. They’re accessories that add to the look of a dress, a skirt or even shorts. Don’t forget it this season! Thank you, Simons, for the great selection.
4. PANTS OVER BOOTS
Fall often means the arrival of booties. Our pro tip: don’t ruin your look by letting your pants cover your booties. Another no-no. Instead, choose a slim pant that you can tuck into the booties or roll up to let some ankle show.
5. WEARING ONLY BLACK
Just because you can’t wear white after Labour Day (as they say) doesn’t mean that you must wear only black. For goodness’ sake, add a bit of colour to your wardrobe. What’s in this fall: brown, khaki and beige, as well as rust orange. Make your way to Jack & Jones or Dynamite. That’s all you’ll see!
6. PLUNGING NECKLINES
Just like skirts, crop tops or clothes that are too short, plunging necklines for fall are not viewed favourably. For both men and women, remember: everything in moderation.
To add some feminine style to your fall look, ladies, try a pattern scarf or a long necklace. And gentlemen, go ahead and add a blazer over your T-shirt to complete your look.
7. PATTERNS ON PATTERNS
While we like (actually, love) patterns, especially in the fall, let’s still try to avoid mixing stripes, animal prints and floral motifs in one outfit. So how do you wear patterns? Simply put, with solids. They’ve got loads of pattern pants, sweaters, jackets and scarves at H&M.
8. ACCESSORY ABUSE
Faux pas number 8: accessory abuse. With cooler temperatures on their way, we may feel the urge to pile on the scarves, tuques, blazers and hoodies. But remember, it’s more fashionable to choose a few accessories than to decorate yourself like a Christmas tree.
P.S. We’ve found some soft, warm and affordable scarves at Dynamite.
9. LOW RISE PANTS
Ah yes! Those famous low rise pants. They’ve been outdated for many years, and still are this fall. So what should you wear? Try high rise pants or jeans from Simons.
1) They slim your figure.
2) They give you a long-legged look.
Can’t complain about that!
10. HIGH HEELS — TOO HIGH HEELS
Drum roll! Our final fashion faux pas comes back to high heels. You know, the ones that prevent you from walking properly, that hurt your feet and back? Those! Pumps, boots or booties — you’ve got lots of alternatives for style and comfort, especially at Browns and Le Pacha.
Now that you’ve filed away these 10 fashion faux pas tips, you’re all set to wow them this season. So do it! Show your true colours!
